Dissertation:

Milena V. Schoenhofen writes her doctoral dissertation under the supervision of PD Dr. Christoph Beier at the GeoZentrum Nordbayern, Germany, in cooperation with Dr. Philipp Brandl (GEOMAR, Kiel, Germany) and Prof. Dr. Simon Turner (Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia).

We predominantly work with fresh volcanic glasses measuring Uranium series along the Tonga arc and backarc system. The highly variable structural and magmatic conditions across arcs into the backarc environment provide a unique opportunity to investigate a large diversity of magmatic processes. Here, we will quantify the changes in the melting regime, particularly changes in physical conditions, melting and mantle sources in the transition from arc front into backarc using a combination of geochemical methods.

Methods:

Glass composition by LA-ICP-MS and EPMA

U-series by MC-ICP-MS
