The Southwest Pacific is a globally unique place with respect to the diversity of plate tectonic processes. Convergent, divergent and transform plate boundaries are closely juxtaposed and are partially interacting. The making of new island arc crust along subduction zones is often followed by breaking the arc through rifting and subsequent seafloor spreading as a result of changes in the regional stress field.
